Amplidata, an innovator in optimized object-based storage technology, will define best practices for storing Big Unstructured Data at the Cloud Computing Expo event next week in New York City, on June 11 – 14.

Big Data has come a long way to encompass a variety of subsets, including the fast growing Big Unstructured Data domain, where Big Entertainment, Big Science, and many other Big Demands are quickly overwhelming enterprise data stores.

At Cloud Expo, Amplidata’s Tom Leyden will discuss Big Unstructured Data as the increasingly prevalent data where organizations generate Petabytes of large, unstructured files. Leyden will explain a major constraint of traditional data storage approaches – the file system – and how it limits many organizations, particularly those with cloud computing deployments.

Leyden’s talk will explain why object storage is a more flexible, more scalable solution than traditional storage technologies that often can be provided at far lower cost:

  • Applications access the data directly through a REST API, eliminating common file system limits, and rendering the file system obsolete.
  • Object Storage was designed to scale uniformly beyond petabytes, independent of the underlying hardware.
  • Object Storage, particularly optimized object storage platforms, are more efficient via drastically reduced overhead needs and much lower power consumption

He’ll survey the dominant storage approaches available today for dealing with Big Unstructured Data, reviewing their pros and cons. Using real-world cases, Leyden will share industry best practices today on building scalable storage infrastructures to handle long term storage of large volumes of static data in ways that can lower the total cost of the storage system by 50% - 70% while supporting massive scalability.
